About Janey
Janey has a background in Interior Design and lives and works in London. She also teaches spatial design at Chelsea College of Art. This has influenced her handling of composition, pictorial balance and tone. The asymmetrical placement on the canvas, simplicity of background and passionate use of colour are an integral part of her approach.
Her early portraits were executed in pastel and coloured pencil but exploration of the use of bold coloured backgrounds as a contrast to the more delicate detail of the features of the face has gradually led to a delight in the opportunities provided by the use of oil paint on an increasingly larger size of canvas.
The still lives and landscapes form an important part of her work too and allow for experimentation particularly in the realm of the different qualities afforded by natural and artificial light. This freedom to explore is valuable and is fed back into the approach to creating a very individual portrait. The realisation of the pleasure to be gained from being able to capture a special moment of time in the life of a person (or an animal) has currently led to more of an emphasis on portrait painting.
